Early Life

Sydney Sweeney was born on September 12, 1997, in Spokane, Washington. Her mother is Lisa Sweeney, who is a former criminal defense lawyer and her father is Steven Sweeney, who is a hospitality professional and also has a brother. She spent her childhood in north-western Idaho and was raised in a religious family.

Sweeney has done her schooling at St. George School in Spokane. She was involved in various kinds of sports. She played soccer, baseball, snow slalom ski etc. Sweeney has also mastered multiple languages and has graduated with high grades. She started growing interest in acting when she auditioned to be an extra for an independent film that was shooting in the Spokane area. Sweeney showed her parents a five-year business plan so that her parents allow her to pursue acting as her career. She started giving auditions in Seattle, Portland, Oregon where they were settled. Later she, along with her family shifted to Los Angeles, when was only 14.

At the beginning of her career, she made a few guest appearances in shows like 90210, Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars.

The Netflix series Everything Sucks!, which portrayed two groups of high school kids in Oregon in 1996, starred Sweeney as Emaline Addario. After that, she had frequent cameos in the HBO drama Sharp Objects as Alice, the roommate Amy Adams's character meets at a mental hospital. The director continued bringing her in for extra sequences even though her character was only supposed to have a minor one. Sweeney visited hospitals where patients engaged in self-harm, and she read accounts of girls who experienced mental illness and self-harm in preparation for the part. She concurrently filmed Sharp Objects and Everything Sucks!, the latter on weekends and the former throughout the week.

Sweeney has starred in the thriller film Under the Silver Lake in 2018. She also played a role in the horror film Along Came the Devil. Later she appeared in a series of films, such as Clementime, Big Time Adolescence and Quentin Tarantino’s drama cum comedy, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

In 2019, she portrayed the character of Cassie Howard, in the drama series Euphoria, which helped her gain fame. Her portrayal was well-received, and she was nominated for the 2022 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In 2020, she decided to launch her very first production house, Fifty-Fifty Films. Other than launching her production house, she also acted in the TV series, Nocturne. In 2021, Sweeney starred in the first season of Mike White's anthology black comedy series The White Lotus. The 73rd Berlin Film Festival showed Sweeney's debut as a Reality Winner in Tina Satter's thriller drama Reality in 2023. Steph Green of IndieWire praised Sweeney's performance, calling the film "inventively mounted and extraordinarily tense" and calling Sweeney "the real deal." She portrayed "Winner so convincingly that it's hard to remember her as the sardonic, pampered teen in The White Lotus, or the nice-girl-turned-nasty in Euphoria," according to Variety's Jessica Kiang.
