Early Life

Johnson was born on October 4, 1989, in Austin, Texas to actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. Most of her family members are involved in the film industry, hence, encouraging her to join the same. Her maternal grandfather Peter Griffith was a child actor and an advertising executive whereas her grandmother Tippy Hedren was an actress. She is the niece of actress Tracy Griffith. Her ex-stepfather is Antonio Banderas. She is also a sister to the actor Jesse Johnson. Because of her parent's profession, she traveled around several places and film sets. Also, she used to work at a local market when she was a teenager during the summers. At the age of 12, after doing a photo shoot with the children of other celebrities for Teen Vogue, she became interested in modeling. Her spending time on several film sets along with her parents during her childhood made her attracted more to the profession. She was determined to pursue acting but her parents didn’t let her follow her passion until she finished high school. At a very young age, she was diagnosed with ADHD and changed schools several times. In an interview, she said, "I was so consistently unmoored and discombobulated. I didn't have an anchor anywhere". She has struggled with depression for many years and has been to rehab.

 

Career

In 1999, she made her film debut in Crazy in Alabama, where she played the role of daughter to her real-life mother Melanie Griffith alongside her step-sister, Stella Banderas, and the director of the film was her former stepfather, Antonio Banderas.

In 2006, she started working with IMG Models. In 2009, she worked as a model for MANGO’s jeans line and also was involved with the “Rising Star” campaign for Australian fashion brand Wish in 2011.

She began her career as an actress by signing with the William Morris Agency. In David Fincher's Oscar-nominated smash film The Social Network (2010), she played a small role as Amelia Ritter. In the fantasy film Beastly (2011), she played a minor role. Later, in So Yong Kim's drama For Ellen (2012), she starred alongside Paul Dano and Jon Heder and told the story of a poor musician caught in a custody dispute. She appeared in three other films in 2012, Nicholas Stoller's romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement, the comedy 21 Jump Street, and Christopher Neil's independent comedy Goats, in which she played a prep school student. In Chris Nelson's film Date and Switch, which was written by Alan Yang, she also portrayed the lead female role.

Johnson made her television debut in March 2012 when she was chosen to play Kate in the Fox comedy series Ben and Kate. On January 25, 2013, the program was canceled after just one season. A brief cameo in Need for Speed (2014) marked Johnson's rapid return to the movie industry. She appeared in the 2013 season finale of the NBC comedy series The Office as one of the new hires.

Johnson rose to fame for her role as Anastasia Steele in the erotic drama film Fifty Shades of Grey, which was released in 2015. She played the lead opposite Jamie Dornan.
