Early Life

Baccarin, the daughter of journalist Fernando Baccarin and actress Vera Setta, was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She has Venetian ancestry and is partially of Italian descent through her father.

 

Baccarin went to Public School 41 and the New York City Lab School for Collaborative Studies, where Claire Danes, her future co-star on Homeland, was a student. Before enrolling in the Juilliard School's theatrical program, she first attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts. There, she was a member of Group 29 in the drama division (1996–2000).

 

Career

Baccarin’s debut movie was Perfume, a fashion-world comedy released in 2001. Later she grabbed the lead role in the movie Way off Broadway in the same year.

She debuted in the TV industry with the series Firefly, which was released in 2002 and again returned to the film with the movie Serenity in 2005.

In 2005, she gave the voice of Black Canary, a character in the animated series, Justice League Unlimited. She also appeared as a guest in season two of the sitcom series How I Met Your Mother. She also appeared as a guest in the series The O.C. In 2006. Baccarin played Carmen, a transsexual woman, in the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia pilot episode that was never broadcast.

Playwrights Horizons in New York City presented Theresa Rebeck's television comedy Our House in May 2009, marking Baccarin's off-Broadway debut. In ABC's 2009–2011 series V, a reimagining of the 1984 series, she was cast in the major role of Anna, the head of the alien Visitors. Producers stated in May 2011 that the show would not return for a third season, shortly after the second-season finale aired. In the same month, Baccarin became a cast member of the Showtime program Homeland, for which she received praise for her portrayal of a troubled former POW. For her portrayal, she received a nomination on July 18, 2013, for the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards' Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category.

She starred in the 2015, action-comedy movie Spy. In the same year, she appeared as the lead in the Fox show Gotham. In the next year, she played the role of Vanessa Carlysle, a love interest of Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds in the movie Deadpool. She reprised her role in the 2nd part of the movie, in 2018. In 2020, she appeared in the apocalyptic thriller Greenland with Gerard Butler.
