After completing his schooling at a local school in his hometown Mehsana, he shifted to Ahmedabad along with his family. He has done his bachelors in Biochemistry from CU Shah Science College, Ahmedabad
Shah was a member of Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later became a RSS volunteer. He first met Narendra Modi in 1982 in Ahmedabad. At that time Modi was working as a RSS Pracharak.
Entry Into Politics
He began his political career as the leader of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi, the student wing of RSS, in 1983. He then joined Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in 1987.
Shah is mainly known for his strategic skills. BJP formed its first government in 1995 and Keshubhai Patel became the Chief Minister. In rural Gujarat at the time, the Indian National Congress, the BJP's principal rival, had significant influence. Together, Modi and Shah set out to wipe out the Congress in rural areas. Their plan was to identify each village's second-most powerful leader and persuade them to become a member of the BJP. They established a network of 8,000 powerful rural leaders who had been defeated in several villages' elections for the position of pradhan, or village chief.
He was elected as the MLA in 1997 and continued to serve as a MLA till 2007 from Sarkhej and became very close to Narendra Modi, who then served as the chief minister of Gujarat.
He became a much more prominent figure in the party when he was assigned with leading the politically significant and difficult state of Uttar Pradesh to an electoral win in the general Lok Sabha elections. He helped the Lok Sabha win 73 out of 80 seats, ensuring a clean sweep of seats. He was rewarded with the position of B.J.P. president after that. B.J.P. won numerous legislative assemblies in Assam, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, and Haryana after being elected president.
Being a sports lover, he was engaged with several sports organizations too. He was the president of the Gujarat State Chess Association. He was elected as the vice-president of the Gujarat Cricket Association in 2009 and became the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association after Modi became the prime minister.
The government led by Congress declared in 2004 that they were planning to abolish the Prevention of Terrorism Act because they believed it to be regressive. Despite a walkout by the opposition, Shah guided the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (Amendment) Bill through the Gujarat State Assembly.
Shah played an important role in influencing the Modi government to support the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Bill, which prohibited religious conversion in the Gujarat state.
Shah was charged with ignoring the police officers who provided evidence against the Gujarati government in cases concerning the riots of 2002 and the fictitious encounters. Shah has also been charged with influencing the Gujarati electoral constituency delimitation process in the BJP's favor.
Controversies
In 2010, he was charged with the murders of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife, Kauser Bi and his associate Tulsiram Prajapati and was arrested on 25th July 2010.
On applying for bail, CBI raised concern that he would use his political connections to fight the case. On 29th October 2010, he was given a three-month bail by the Gujarat High Court. However, Justice Aftab Alam sent a petition to his residence and banned him from entering Gujarat from 2010 to 2012. He, then, shifted to Delhi. Later, the Supreme Court canceled his bail on CBI’s plea. In 2012, he was finally given the bail by Supreme Court and was allowed to go back to Gujarat. In 2014 he was discharged from the Sohrabuddin case.
In 2013 he was accused of spying on a woman in 2009. A set of taped audio conversations between Shah and police officer GL Singhal was released by Cobrapost and Gulail, two investigative websites. Those tapes were about Ishrat Jahan's Case, which was submitted to the CBI. Shah denied all the accusations and called it a political propaganda by the rival party.
